1. Introduction to deep eutectic solvents
1.1 Definition
The term deep eutectic solvent, or DES for Deep Eutectic Solvents, was introduced by Abbott et al. in 2003 to designate a new class of mixtures used as custom solvents with properties strongly influenced by the presence of hydrogen bonds. The precise definition of a deep eutectic solvent remains controversial, as illustrated in table 1 .
