4. Conclusions – Outlook
Biogas and its energy recovery offer an alternative to clean energy production that is still under-exploited in France. Nevertheless, socio-economic indicators predict strong growth in this sector over the coming years.
Among the various challenges and technical choices required in the design of a biogas upgrading process, the treatment of trace minority compounds is all too often overlooked, resulting in premature and unforeseen equipment degradation. In fact, these compounds pose a major problem for the equipment, despite their low concentrations compared with those of methane, the target molecule of biogas. Siloxanes and halogenated and/or sulfur compounds represent a risk of premature equipment degradation, which has a direct impact on the economic balance of the industry.
