 INTRODUCTION

Summary

The diagnosis and monitoring of pathologies, including cancers and infectious diseases, represent major challenges in the healthcare field. New nanobiosensors, whose sensitive elements are olfactory receptors, offer the possibility of developing high-performance, low-cost detection devices, enabling direct, quantitative measurement without markers. This article presents the design principle and biomedical applications of bio-electronic noses. The development of these biosensors is detailed, describing the production of olfactory receptors, methods for their immobilization and odor detection, and the benefits of miniaturization. Finally, examples of recent achievements are provided.

Abstract

Diagnosis and monitoring of pathologies, including cancers and infectious diseases, represent major challenges in the field of healthcare. New nanobiosensors carring olfactory receptors as sensitive elements provide effective and cheap detection devices allowing a quantitative and direct measurement without any labeling. This article presents the design principle and the biomedical applications of bioelectronic noses. The elaboration of these biosensors is detailed by describing the production of olfactory receptors, the methods for immobilization and for odor detection, as well as the contributions of miniaturization. Finally, examples of recent implementations are provided.
