Foreshore

Also known as the "tidal zone" or "intertidal zone", this is the littoral zone separating the water levels reached during high and low spring tides.

Schorre

High part of the foreshore, near the seashore. This area is flooded during high spring tides.

Slikke (a Dutch word meaning "mud")

Often referred to as the "coastal mudflat", this is the lowest part of the foreshore. Situated beneath the schorre, it is regularly flooded at high tide, even during neap tides (low tidal range).
