3. Integration and coupling with upstream and downstream biorefinery activities
The ability to combine functionalization with the other two actions (deconstruction, separation) is a powerful lever for innovation and performance in biobased foods and products.
The starting assumption is that plants with the best possible adaptation to use will be considered. However, two factors may alter this logic:
the existence of multiple routes to obtain a molecule, such as rubber, produced either from the polymer that makes up the latex of the rubber tree, or chemically polymerized from butadiene obtained from the fermentation of oses;
the ratio between the cost of raw materials and the cost of processes, which can lead to plant, algal or microbial solutions that meet concerns for minimal processing or cultivation systems that minimize environmental impact.
