8. Radiation protection regulations
The aim of French radiation protection regulations is to put in place the legislative and regulatory tools needed to ensure the protection of people confronted (or likely to be confronted) with radiological risk, whether they are members of the public, workers, or patients exposed to ionizing radiation for medical reasons. From the outset, these regulations have been based on international recommendations, mainly issued by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). In addition, as France is a member of the European Union, there is an intermediate stage in the implementation of these recommendations, which serve as the basis for European radiation protection directives. These directives must then be transposed into the national regulations of each member country, ensuring that the essential points of the regulations are uniform throughout the European Union.
