2. Modes of exposure to ionizing radiation
Exposure to ionizing radiation can occur in a number of ways, and it is important to know as much as possible about the conditions under which it occurs in order to appreciate the possible consequences. There are three types of exposure: external, internal and cutaneous.
2.1 External exposure
Exposure is said to be "external" when the radiation-emitting source is located outside the organism subjected to the action of ionizing radiation. This is the most frequent case in the workplace.
This exposure can be global if the radiation is emitted in all directions in space, or localized if the beam is limited by a collimator. It can also be continuous, isolated or intermittent.
