 INTRODUCTION

Fire safety regulations increasingly allow the use of fire safety engineering to assess a structure's fire performance.

The article [SE 2 045] details the ISI methodology as proposed by the national ISI project in France, but also as applied in the transport and building sectors in other countries or variants. The article also details the safety objectives, functional requirements and performance criteria associated with the ISI approach.

This article completes [SE 2 045] by detailing the regulatory application of ISI in the building industry in France. In fact, in these regulated structures, only certain functions or systems are subject to ISI in France: smoke extraction and combustible insulation, for example.

In addition, this article presents several examples of the application of fire safety engineering methods:

  • The first example deals with a small store (dry cleaner), realized in the case of PN ISI ;

  • the second example deals with a cinema complex, with a particular focus on evacuation conditions. This example was also produced as part of the PN ISI ;

  • the third part presents the context of application and details a number of studies carried out in the context of composite shipbuilding, the frame of reference being that of the International Maritime Organization;

  • the fourth part presents the context and examples of applications in the railway sector.
