5. Changes in building stock and uses

This section presents a number of case studies to illustrate the lessons that can be learned from the preceding considerations on the subject of smoke control in real buildings.

5.1 Natural smoke ventilation

Increasingly, and particularly for large volumes, natural smoke extraction solutions are being sought. In such cases, the challenge is to propose sufficient outlet surfaces and, as we have seen, to ensure that the air supply surfaces at the bottom of the building are larger than the outlet surfaces. The methods presented in this article enable us to carry out pre-sizing and solution-finding calculations extremely rapidly.
