8. Glossary – Definitions
Danger; Hazard
This concept defines a property intrinsic to a substance (butane, chlorine...), a technical system (pressurization of a gas...), an arrangement (elevation of a load), an organism (microbes), etc..., of such a nature as to cause damage to a "vulnerable element" [the notion of "danger" thus includes the notions of flammability or explosiveness, toxicity, infectious character, etc. inherent in a product, and that of available energy (pneumatic or potential) which characterize the danger] (definition taken from the circular of May 10 2010).
Risque; Risk
"Combination of the probability of an event and its consequences" (ISO/IEC 73), "combination of the probability of damage and its severity" (ISO/IEC 51).
