3. Consolidation with constant fiber rate
Compression of a fibrous reinforcement prepreg with a high-viscosity polymer gives rise to flows in which the fibers are transported by the polymer. This mechanism is observed for thermoplastic polymers and for certain formulations of thermoset prepregs. Unlike the situations described in Section 2, where interstitial flow is involved, here it's the composite that flows without any relative fiber/matrix velocity. The practical consequence is that the fiber content of the composite is preserved during processing.
