Coextrusion has considerably accelerated the development of the sheet and plate markets.

In the field of sheet metal, the insertion of thin surface layers has solved, in an economically acceptable way, the problems of surface hardness (scratches), and the inalterability of walls in aggressive environments (UV, weather, chemical, internal refrigerator coatings).

In the field of thin flexible films, cast-film and blown-film coextrusion offered a less capital-intensive and more cost-effective alternative (one-step manufacture and shorter production runs) to – laminating technology.
