ABSTRACT

The mastery of the fire reaction of polymers is a major challenge as it is intricately linked to the safety of persons and goods in the event of a fire. The use of nanoparticles as components of flame-retardant systems is a method in order to improve the fire reaction of polymers. The fire reaction of nanocomposites depends on the type of incorporated particles and the quality of their dispersion in the matrix. The principal effects observed are an increase in the thermal stability and a reduction of the heat-output peak.

 INTRODUCTION

Summary

The use of nanoparticles as constituents of flame-retardant systems is one of the most innovative ways of improving the fire behavior of polymers. The reaction of nanocomposites to fire depends on the type of particles incorporated and the quality of their dispersion in the matrix, in particular by means of organo-modifiers. The main effects observed are an increase in thermal stability and a reduction in peak heat output. These effects are linked to mechanisms such as reduced molecular mobility, modified degradation modes and the creation of barrier layers on the surface of polymeric materials.

Abstract

The use of nanoparticles as components of flame retardant systems is an innovating way of improving polymer fire behavior. The fire reaction of nanocomposites depends on the type of incorporated particles and the quality of their dispersion, thanks particularly to organomodifiers. The main observed benefits are the increase of thermal stability and the reduction of the peak of heat release rate. These effects result from mechanisms such as molecular mobility reduction, change in degradation pathways or creation of barrier layer at the surface of polymeric materials.
