UNION CARBIDE first patented PEEK in 1963, but the current preparation process is based on the work of ICI (1978).
There are two routes to polyaryletherketone (PAEK) synthesis.
1.1 Electrophilic substitution
Unit linking is achieved by forming ketone bonds through the reaction of aromatic carboxylic acid chlorides, as shown by the example of polyetherketone (PEK):
This method is used for polymers that are more ketones than ethers (PEK, PEKK, PEKEKK, etc.).
