1. Action of ionizing radiation on polymers

Ionizing radiation is characterized by the fact that it possesses sufficient energy to create reactive entities, called ions, within the ionized material, enabling it to be processed at ambient temperature and at a controlled depth [40] .

1.1 Different types of ionizing radiation

The most common types of radiation are UV rays, infrared rays, microwaves, X-rays, accelerated electrons and gamma rays. Only the last three are ionizing radiation. They act by absorbing energy, and their energy is sufficient to pull electrons out of atoms' electron clouds.
