2. Composite waste for recycling
The world market volume for composites is around 7.6 million tonnes/year, of which 65-70% are thermosets (2005 figures). Europe's share is around 24%, or 1.8 million tonnes/year. The application sectors concerned [3] are :
automotive and transport (26% by volume);
construction and civil engineering (30%) ;
electrical and electronic equipment (14%);
sports, leisure and nautical construction (16%);
aeronautics accounted for just 3% by volume (but 18% by value).
France accounts for around 300,000 tonnes/year. On this basis, we can estimate that the automotive industry consumes 108,000 tonnes/year, electrical and electronic equipment 45,000 tonnes/year, and sports, leisure and...

Economic data
Composite materials are traditionally much less recycled (5%) than their competitors (65-70% for steel and 30-35% for aluminum in North America, for example). Recycling has developed strongly in Japan (5 to 10 years ahead of Europe), and is now becoming a regulatory obligation in Europe, where it mainly concerns automotive and electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) waste. The corresponding value chain is illustrated at...
