3. Characterization

3.1 Microstructure

Butadiene is known to lead to three different structures in radical polymerization (1,4-trans; 1,4-cis or 1,2) as illustrated in figure 3 .

The microstructure of a polybutadiene characterizes the random proportion of linkages in the polymer chain. It depends on the polymerization temperature, with the 1,4-trans structure remaining in the majority (table 2 ).
