6.1 Aerospace and military

Space and military propulsion technologies were behind the first developments in PBHTs for solid fuels for missiles and rockets, which offer much improved propulsive performance compared with liquid fuels. These materials offer greater safety in terms of their insensitivity to the risk of impact or detonation by influence.

The work of A. Davenas , conducted at the Société Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs (SNPE), is a benchmark in this field.

PBHTs can be used to formulate propellants with very high concentrations of solid explosive fillers, from 70 to 90% by mass, such as sodium perchlorate and aluminum powder.
