8. Glass recycling for packaging

  • Like other packaging materials, glass has various "end-of-life" options once its contents have been used:

    • reuse by refilling with the same product; this generally involves returnable packaging integrated into a well-controlled recycling circuit (deposit);

    • collection as household waste or not, in household waste collection systems, followed by landfilling or incineration with other household waste;

    • recovery through material recycling in specific collection systems, which will be described at greater length in this article; this is now predominant in most developed countries with a large market for glass packaging not covered by a deposit system.
