7. Recycling container glass

7.1 Three solutions for used food packaging

  • The first is reuse by refilling, using returnable bottles with a limited number of reuses. This method was abandoned in the 1960s, and gradually replaced by two others.

  • The second solution treats glass as non-specific waste, and it is then landfilled or incinerated like any other household waste. This solution is, of course, completely unsatisfactory and even irresponsible in the current context of waste reduction. That said, it is still partly the case today, since too much glass packaging is still not recycled in France. In fact, in 2009, only six out of ten bottles were recycled.
