Safer by design is a design theory that focuses on optimizing the risk/benefit ratio of a product over its entire life cycle, looking at both environmental and socio-economic aspects.
The term "environmental risks/benefits" includes risks or benefits to the environment, as well as to health.
Safer by design takes into account the entire life cycle of a product, which can be summarized in three main phases:
manufacturing ;
use ;
end of life.
In concrete terms, this means taking a total product life-cycle perspective at the design stage, and favoring a design that minimizes risks and maximizes environmental and socio-economic benefits for each phase....
