1. Definition of a mechanical system
A scientific discipline (knowledge), mechanics is the science of the laws of motion, equilibrium, forces and the energies they mobilize. The first branch of physics, mechanics encompasses many fields of knowledge, from the infinitely large (celestial mechanics) to the infinitely small (quantum and random mechanics).
However, for the sake of clarity, we can distinguish a "core": fundamental mechanics, comprising both theoretical (analytical mechanics, numerical mechanics) and experimental aspects. Around this core, there are two major fields: solid mechanics and fluid mechanics, to which numerous fields of knowledge are associated: materials, structures, mechanisms, acoustics, thermics, flows, etc.
