INTRODUCTION
The assembly of composite parts (composite-on-composite, composite-on-metal, etc.) frequently calls for adhesive bonding, because of the advantages it offers over other existing techniques, as described in the article .
However, the application of this joining technique calls for special skills (design of the parts to be joined, preparation of the surfaces to be joined, testing of the joints to determine their mechanical, physical or chemical characteristics, etc.) and knowledge of the different types of adhesive and their characteristics, in order to select the adhesive best suited to a specific joining problem.
Readers are invited to consult the articles on Bonding materials:
Bonding of materials. Mechanisms. Adhesive classification ;
Bonding materials. Characteristics and application of adhesives ;
Bonding materials. Applications ;
Bonding materials. To find out more .
This article is the second part of a series devoted to composite bonding:
Joining composites. Bonding highlights ;
Bonding composites. General [BM 7 625] ;
Bonding composites. Aerospace sector ;
Bonding composites. Road and rail sectors ;
Composite bonding. Shipbuilding sector ;
Bonding composites. Construction, sports, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering ;
Bonding composites. Find out more [Doc. BM 7 630].
Readers will find a wealth of practical information (suppliers of adhesives and materials, standards, technical characteristics of various adhesives, etc.) in the document Pour en savoir plus [Doc. BM 7 630].
We won't go into the adhesion of resins and matrices to reinforcing fibers here, as this is the subject of other articles in Techniques de l'Ingénieur devoted to the constitution and manufacture of composite materials (see the sub-heading Reinforcing fillers and fibers in the Plastics and Composites treatise).
