1. General
For a theoretical study of the operation of air cushions, the reader is referred to the article Air cushions in the treatise Mechanical Engineering.
This section covers only those techniques used to transfer and handle loads in factories, on shop floors or on work benches, and excludes air cushions used in marine vehicles known as hovercraft, as well as amphibious and all-terrain vehicles, which fall into the category of transport rather than handling.
Transport vehicles are equipped with a different containment technology, i.e. flexible skirts that have to disappear over the obstacle and at cushion escape heights of a few millimeters to a few centimeters.
