4. Air cushions on work tables

These are air cushions used when you are in control of the work area, or at least when you are sure of the quality of the surface, as opposed to ground handling. This is the cushion that most closely resembles the fluid slide generally used on machine tools. It is suitable for weights ranging from a few dozen kilograms to several tons.

There are three types of cushion, depending on the area to be covered.

4.1 Rigid cushions

If the work area is a table that has been virtually ground to tolerances of hundredths of a millimeter, a rigid cushion can be used, i.e. a metal stud lubricated with a film of air, with a height of flight of around 2 to 3 hundredths of a millimeter (figure
