4. Conclusion

After describing the classification of polymers and their synthesis methods, the general principles of the chemistry associated with their thermal decomposition and combustion were explained. As the chemical nature of polymers is very diverse, there is no universal solution for improving their fire behavior and making them flame-retardant. It is only by understanding the mechanisms of thermal decomposition and polymer combustion (the nature of the gaseous and condensed phases) that an effective fireproofing strategy can be defined, using the different modes of action and types of flame retardants described in this article.
