INTRODUCTION
As long as its atoms are not arranged in the most stable way, any material contains potential energy stored in chemical form. This material is said to be energetic if this energy can be released in a very short time (less than a few fractions of a second) during an exothermic reaction (combustion).
This article provides an introduction to energetic materials, with a focus on the design of new products. Books and review articles are available for more information on the chemistry
