6. Glossary

acoustic emission; émission acoustique

Corresponds, according to AFNOR 23, to a "phenomenon of elastic energy release in the form of transient elastic waves within a material during dynamic deformation processes".

In seismology, defines the seismic wave train that follows the main part of an earthquake. For an acoustic burst, it is the wave train that follows the initial impulsive part, and results from the multiple scattering of the elastic wave emitted on the internal defects of the medium/material.
