Industrial discharge water can be toxic to living organisms even if it comes up to regulatory standards, especially in the case of multiple contaminations. It is therefore necessary to characterize the pollutant load of a discharge water not only from a qualitative and quantitative chemical point of view but also to measure its impact and toxicity. This article shows that chemical analysis and ecotoxicological tests are useful tools to analyze the chemical composition of industrial discharge waters containing metals and to evaluate and compare its toxicity: this dual approach is complementary.

INTRODUCTION
Aqueous discharges from the surface treatment process contain a range of contaminants, including metals. Even if they comply with current regulations, these discharges can be toxic for the environment and living organisms. There is therefore a real interest in coupling two different but complementary approaches, such as chemical analysis and ecotoxicology, to identify not only qualitatively and quantitatively the substances present in waste, but also to assess their environmental quality. Since the 2000s, a growing number of research studies involving chemists and biologists have been published, with the aim of characterizing various industrial effluents. The aim of this article is to show that ecotoxicological tests are relevant tools for assessing and comparing the toxicity of effluents such as those from the surface treatment sector, as a complement to chemical analysis, which characterizes the contaminant load of a discharge from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. An example of water engineering research to measure the chemical efficiency of water treatment processes is also described.
