4. River ports
The competitiveness of inland waterway transport depends on the ability to load and unload freight at multifunctional inland ports and high-performance specialist terminals. It often also depends on their connection with seaports.
4.1 Design and construction
We distinguish between longitudinal ports, which develop along the waterway, and dock ports.
Longitudinal harbors include linear harbors, which consist of simple shoreline facilities for berthing, loading and unloading boats, and harbor platforms, whose larger surface areas (a few dozen hectares) are ideal for waterway-related industrial activities. The channel must be widened so that parked vessels do not impede the transit of other vessels.
