1.1 Definition of sewage sludge

In 2006, French annual waste production totaled 868 million tons, including 50 million tons of municipal waste, of which sewage sludge accounted for 19% . Sewage sludge is the by-product collected during the various stages of wastewater treatment: primary sludge (from the settling of suspended solids), physico-chemical sludge (fine colloidal matter agglomerated after treatment with coagulants, for example) and biological sludge (made up of sewage biomass)
