3. Application of the environmental footprint

3.1 Ecological footprint in New Zealand

The input-output analysis methodology was first applied by Bicknell et al. in calculating New Zealand's environmental footprint. They used an 80-industry matrix (regional TES) produced by Statistics New Zealand (1991), land-use data from New Zealand's Yearbooks and Transit New Zealand (1994) and energy data from Peet (1991). This enabled them to calculate New Zealand's ecological footprint for 1991.
