Some groundwater is of such natural quality that it can be used as drinking water.
8.1 Natural mineral waters
European Directive 2009/54/EC, on the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters, defines microbiological quality requirements, conditions for exploiting the resource, authorized treatments for natural mineral water, and labeling requirements.
European legislation has defined it as natural water originating from an underground water table or deposit and characterized by :
a content of certain mineral salts ;
the presence of trace elements or other constituents;
