2. Waste ignition/combustibility processes

Gases or vapours may be emitted by :

  • liquids (saturation vapour pressure at room temperature, or vaporization by heating);

  • solids (gases emitted when a solid is thermally degraded by heating).

In the presence of air, these gases or vapors can give rise to flammable air/gas mixtures [20] :

  • or in the presence of an external energy source (pilot flame, spark, etc.) in the mixture;

  • or in the absence of additional energy: this is the self-ignition process, which requires higher temperatures to allow oxidation reactions to run riot.
