2. EMAS versus ISO 14001
2.1 Terminology
The European system is called a "regulation" and not a "standard", as is the case for ISO 14001 . Organizations wishing to join must have their EMS verified by an accredited environmental verifier before it can be registered with the regulations, whereas the standard requires an accredited environmental certifier before the certification stage.
But even if the terminology differs, the result is identical. In either case, the EMS of any organization that meets the requirements of the respective standard will be officially validated.
