Traffic instabilities, which can be easily reproduced by tracking law models, have a number of drawbacks: increased driver stress and accident risk, higher fuel consumption, and in some cases under-utilization of infrastructure (linked to lower throughput). Models show that the amplification of disturbances in dense traffic are directly linked to drivers' reaction time τ , and indirectly to the fact that a driver only "sees" the vehicle in front of him
