4. Example

To illustrate the application of LCA to activated sludge wastewater treatment plants, an example based on the simulation of two scenarios is proposed. The LCA was carried out using Simapro 6 (Préconsultants, Amersfoot, Netherlands).

4.1 Defining the objective and scope of the study

The aim of this example is to show the importance of sludge treatment in the environmental balance of the overall process. The aim is to compare two wastewater treatment systems that differ in their sludge treatment methods (anaerobic digestion or lime stabilization). The Functional Unit (FU) corresponds to the treatment of the volume of urban wastewater generated by one inhabitant in France for one year, based on a daily "production" of 200 liters (table
