For many biomedical applications, the materials used must meet criteria such as ease of manufacture, biodegradability, biocompatibility, good mechanical resistance and often allow the circulation and exchange of molecules. The fibroin produced by Bombyx mori, which is of natural origin, meets all these conditions and can be chemically modified, has attracted growing interest from the scientific community. What's more, compared with solid three-dimensional matrices, microporous fibrous matrices with a high surface-to-volume ratio are often sought after for tissue engineering applications, where cell adhesion and proliferation are paramount.
