3.1 Tools and methods
The transposition into French law of the June 2002 European directive on environmental noise requires the creation of mainly calculation-based maps. These maps can be produced partly on the basis of estimated or even flat-rate data, compatible with an accuracy of the order of 5 dB(A) per class (see methodological guide ). In the mid-1980s, almost half the French population was exposed to an outdoor daytime noise level of over 55 dB(A). At the same time, 28% of the population was exposed to a level above the threshold recommended by the 1992 Noise Act (table 1 ).
