8. Conclusions

The development of standardization in Europe has been marked by the dual impetus of the Single Market and the New Approach.

As we have seen, the need for standardization, at whatever level, can arise from requests from stakeholders in standardization, and in particular from the world of industry. Another source of work may be requests formulated by the European Commission by means of mandates to enable the application of European directives drafted in the form of the New Approach. These directives lay down the essential requirements to be met by the equipment they deal with. Technical texts must be drawn up to verify compliance with these essential requirements. The Commission of the European Communities asks standardizers (CEN, CENELEC or ETSI) to draw up these texts.
