2. 1-axis gyroscopes

2.1 Definition and structure

A 1-axis (or: one-degree-of-freedom) gyroscope essentially comprises (figure 4 ):

  • a box B (case), whose instantaneous absolute rotation is represented by ΩB ;

  • a cardan ring C (sometimes forming a sealed housing) connected to B by a cardan shaft S called the out-put axis; this shaft can be materialized by a torsion shaft, by high-quality ball...
