ABSTRACT

The technologies of thermal imaging cameras are based on quantum or thermal sensor arrays. The cameras are characterized in the fields of thermal imaging and thermographic measurement. The technological evolution from mechanical scanning devices, as well as the progress to be made, are explained. Thermography has developed in every application of thermics, research and development, maintenance, prevention and the construction sector in 2005. Its development is slower in the control of products and processes and in non-destructive control (NDC).

 INTRODUCTION

This article follows on from the first article on the principles and measurements of thermography [R 2 740] .

In this second article, we'll take a broad look at detectors and sensors, while remaining focused on measurement thermography.

We'll structure the characteristics of the thermal camera in two areas, distinguishing between the two main technological families. We'll look at instrumental optics, analog instrumentation electronics and digital electronics. Finally, the camera will be placed in a thermography system.

The article continues with a discussion of thermography applications and the uses of thermal imaging cameras.

Readers will find information on standards and bibliography in "For further information".
