5. Model or trajectory tracking

In the preceding developments, we have only dealt with stabilization-related problems. Here, we show that variable-structure control can also be used to tackle model tracking or reference trajectory problems, which are of obvious practical interest. We simply show that, for this purpose, it is sufficient to choose a suitable sliding surface.
