Operational safety is "the ability of an entity to avoid the occurrence of critical or catastrophic events under given conditions", or the absence of intolerable risk. It is a methodology for analyzing and eliminating unacceptable risks that could result in injury, direct or indirect damage to human health, environmental degradation or property damage. Regulatory requirements relating to the safety of hazardous industrial facilities are increasingly stringent, and have led to the development of the discipline of technological risk management.
