3. Agent architecture, operation and reasoning

Within an ADM, agents are very often heterogeneous: they can be of different natures (software or physical, e.g. robots), be cooperative or competitive, or have different reasoning capacities and architectures (reactive vs. cognitive).

3.1 Agent typology and architecture

The different reasoning (i.e. deliberation) capabilities of agents give rise to an associated typology and architecture. Traditionally, two main agent archetypes have been distinguished: reactive agents and cognitive agents. However, most existing agents fall somewhere between these two archetypes.

Reactive agents behave reflexively, based on their perceptions, in a stimulus/action pattern.
