Summary

X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques (XANES and EXAFS) are increasingly used to analyze ancient and artistic materials. This article gives an overview of the various objects and materials studied using these methods. Amorphous materials (glass and ceramics) were the first to benefit from these new tools. Subsequently, examples have diversified, ranging from metals to woods and pigments. The advantages of these techniques are illustrated, along with recent instrumental developments offering these tools new capabilities.

Abstract

X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques (XANES and EXAFS) are increasingly used for the analysis of ancient and artistic materials. This article gives a wide view of the different objects and materials that can be analysed with these methods. Amorphous materials (such as glass and ceramics) were the first to benefit from these new tools. Then, various other materials, from metals to woods, through pigments, were also analysed similarly. The advantages of these techniques are presented as well as recent instrumental developments offering new capabilities to these methods.
