2. Instrumentation

In order to achieve the chromatographic performance expected with stationary phases filled with small particles, major changes were made to the instrumentation from 2004 onwards, with the first commercialization of a UHPLC device. In the case of rapid separations, the use of small particles enables a reduction in column dimensions and an increase in the linear velocity of the mobile phase, but induces a high pressure drop [P 1 494][IN 187] .
