The use of gradients, which has developed in recent years, makes predictive calculations of ion retention tricky, and optimization of separations complex. A mathematical model developed by Jandera and Churazek can be used to calculate predictive retention factors under both isocratic and gradient conditions. It has been shown that the results of the theoretical approach are superimposable on experimental measurements
