The number of instrumentation companies involved in ICP-OES, as well as the worldwide market of several thousand units, attests to the continuing strong interest in this technique, thanks to its qualities as described above. ICP-MS coupling is certainly complementary rather than competitive, which justifies the parallel acquisition of both technologies. To date, this technique has reached maturity, with technical innovations currently rare and often linked to accessories such as sample introduction systems.
