5. Ageing damage: protection and restoration

If the pure gold coating is continuous and adheres well to the substrate, it should act as protection against corrosion or substrate degradation. In fact, this is rarely the case, since on the one hand, the gilding alloy is not always pure gold, and on the other, the adhesive and substrate may degrade despite this protection.
